The story began in 1989 when at the age of 16, St John, was heavily
into the hip-hop scene. Under the influence of the scratch DJ's, he
thought it a good idea to join his brother's and his own fidelity
hi-fi's. Even without any pitch control, he began practising and
mixing like his idols at the time. As would be expected, that
particular set of decks didn't last all that long, so a friend lent
him a DJ 2000 deck and a hi-fi turntable.
St john's first DJ appearance then came a short time later at a local
youth club - well we all have to start somewhere!!!
As his next step, at the age of 19, he purchased his first set of
real decks, some Technics. By then, his music preference had swayed
toward the rave scene and he began his own night at a bar in his
local town. Also about this time, St John discovered clubbing and
frequent visits to clubs such as 'Golden' , 'Renaissance' and
'Progress' inspired him to do his utmost to become a successful DJ.
With this idea in mind, at 21, he sent a demo tape to Emporium in
Coalville and was offered a regular spot at a night called 'The New
Empire'. Not long after this, he met up with Les Hemstock who Djed at
a club called 'Paradise'. Les put St John on the spot one night by
asking him to DJ then and there. Obviously impressed by what he saw,
he offered St John a residency and together they started a night;
'Evolution', on a Saturday. It was at this time that the work began
rolling in.
A year or so later, the Paradise club closed and they began their
next project, 'Peach', which was held at 'Rosie's', a club in
Solihull. Initially playing commercial house and garage, St John and
Les set their sights on a more underground feel. They then came up
with the idea for a night that proved to be the best career move they
could have made and 'Gold n Delicious' was born. This propelled St
John into numerous warm-up slots for the likes of Dave Pearce and The
Lisa Marie Experience- a night renowned as being the biggest Monday
night in the country, attracting up to 2500 people every week to the
town of Stoke-on-Trent.
Over the following few years, St John was offered guest appearance
work at venues such as '3some' at 'the Loft' in Derby. There he
worked alongside big name DJ's such as Nick Rafferty and Lisa Lashes.
At this point a sister night to 'Gold n Delicious' called 'Ascension'
kicked off at the 'Evolution' nightclub in Leeds. St John regularly
appeared there on a Saturday night alongside Matt Hardwick and Rob
Tissera.
Presently, St John can be seen Djing at clubs around the Midlands
such as Religion, Fierce and has also played at big events such as
Insomniacz 3rd birthday party which was held at the famous Republic
in Sheffield. Also club nights such as 'Bubblelove' in Leicester, he
has played alongside Sarah G, Tall Paul and other head lining DJ's.
A new venture, M.O.T!ON and a Sunday club called Rub!c has been set
up with a close friend to return clubbing to its former glory and he
can be seen playing there on a monthly basis as
a resident.
As for the future, he searches for work in other clubs, bigger cities
and in the big wide world...so until then, watch this space....
